If Total Commander is your main file manager then you probably use him every day to open, view, or edit files, packages, videos, etc… It is always recommended that before you open any package or file which you get from friends or family on CD/DVD, USB device, to scan it and check is it clean from viruses or spyware.
To perform this quick procedure it is necessary to have installed Antivirus or Antispyware software in your computer. In my case I have installed Microsoft Live OneCare and I will use this Antivirus software to scan on USB device. I got this USB device from my friend and as usual I am not sure it is clean and safe to open, so first thing I am gone do is to scan the entire USB (find out how to test your antivirus).
To do that open you’re Total Commander and on top of the window you should see Drive buttons.

| This is location within Total Commander where you can find Drive buttons |
If those drive buttons are not visible you can show them by clicking Configuration > Options > and under Layout section check filed “Show Drive Buttons”, Now after drive buttons are visible, right click on drive which you want to scan (I choose drive E:\ ) and from drop down menu choose “Scan for Viruses…”. The scan will start immediately. Wait few minutes to antivirus scan entire CD/DVD, USB, Device, external Hard Drive, etc…
If your antivirus do not find any virus you can safely now open that drive otherwise if you find anything try to remove and clean that drive.
