Mac X Panther: More and more types

Dec 08, 2006 4: 27 PM

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If Jaguar already taught the eyeteeth at the time of supporting to typesetter characteristics outposts, Panther has washed them, sharpened and removed brightness. In order to begin, any developed application of native form for Panther can make use (if it wants), and nothing else leave the box, characteristics until now reserved to applications of desktop publishing and graphical design, like ties, kerning, spaced numerical, fractions, ornaments, vertical position, etc. For example, a simple look to the trowel types of Cocoa applications as the simple “TextEdit” makes jump the tears (of joy) to more than one. Panther takes well with the main typesetter formats of the market, that is to say, PostScript Type 1, TrueType and OpenType. Now you can use types True Type of PC, is enough with dragging & dropping. And to demonstrate its multinational qualities, it also supports the standard Unicode 4,0, being able of this form to accede to thousands of special characters of languages like the Cyrillic, Chinese or Japanese.

So much and so varied typography will require, sooner or later, the use of a good typesetter manager. Until now, the designers who worked with previous Mac OS 9 and enjoyed Adobe Type Manager Deluxe, but as soon as he is asked to him the manufacturer for the native version for Mac OS X, the answer he is, he has been and he will be, “I feel it, but not”. Then, Apple has solved, partly, the problem, with the inclusion of the application “typesetter Catalogue”, a utility that allows to previsualize fonts, to organize them by groups, to activate them and to deactivate them, to install and to reinstall. The application consists of a divided main window in three columns; the first sample the groups in which we have classified our catalogue of types; second, the fonts that compose the selected group, grouped as well in families (for example, Normal Times, Times Roman, etc); third, a previous vision of the source selected in form of alphabet (to the size that we have chosen) accompanied by the description (optional) of the same one.

To create new groups or to activate and to deactivate sources are as simple as to click with the mouse. Although it fulfills its assignment perfectly, lie down in lack characteristic outposts (and essential for many users) like the auto activation of types or the possibility of activating and of deactivating groups with no need to return to open or to close the open maps, like made the extinct Type Manager Deluxe. So, for those with greater requirements, he is not others to throw a look to Suitcase X1, that in its new incarnation is 100% compatible one with Mac OS X and adds, in addition, utilities like choosing the text to previsualize, search of sources, auto activation, repair of defective types, resolution of conflicts and a long list of others.
