Ubuntu 8.10 comes with OpenOffice 2.4.1 installed and if you want to use the new improved version of this program then this is the article for you.
The first thing you need to do is to add a warehouse for OpenOffice.org 3.0 and then upgrade installed packages. Here's what you need to do:
1. Go to System > Administration> Software Sources.
2. On the Third-Party Software tab, click on the button “Add” and paste the following lines:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main
3. Click Close and then click on Reload and wait for the program to close.
4. When you close the Software Sources window, in the system tray update icon will appear. Click on the icon.
That's all. OpenOffice 3.0 is now installed in your Ubuntu 8.10 system
