How to Protect your Wireless Network?

Date: May 15, 2007

Wireless Network or Wi-Fi is great thing: there is no cables, you can connect devices which are do not have Ethernet adapter (PDA, mobile self phone,...). From other side, Wi-Fi network needs to be additional protected otherwise anyone can use your computer resources, so let’s remember of some basic stuffs.

Change router password - you need to change Default password for access to router administrator panel; for example in section “Admin / Management”.

Insert MAC address - Every network card have unique MAC address which could be found on label (she is placed on network card), if you network card is integrated on motherboard, using software you can find that address. When you find that address, inside router administrator panel find where you need to insert that MAC address. On Linksys router it is in section Wireless / Mac / Address / Wireless MAC Filter. Click on enable, then click "Permit only PC's listed to access the wireless network", than "Edit MAC Filter List"

Encryption - You need to protect Wireless communication. Newest routers do encryption systems - WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA-PSK (Wireless Protected Access). Second system is safer so you need to choose him. If your router don't support WPA-PSK than you do not have other solution and choose WEP.
