MSN/Windows Messenger Issue with Norton Internet Security

By: Staff
Date: April 25, 2007

There is a known issue with Norton Internet Security when user tries to exit MSN Messenger via the taskbar.

A message alert will prompt:

"There are other applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. You must close these other applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. These applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and Internet Explorer"

You may resolve this permanently by disabling Windows Messenger protection.

To do so:

  1. Double-click the Norton AntiVirus 2005 icon on the desktop
  2. Click on Options
  3. Click on Instant Messenger on the left side
  4. Remove the check mark for "Windows Messenger (recommended)"
  5. Click OK

However, instead of exiting Window Messenger, we suggest you sign off of Windows Messenger.

To do so:

  1. Right-click the MSN tray icon
  2. Click Sign Out

Or

  1. Launch MSN Messenger
  2. Click on File
  3. Click "Sign Out"
