Share a printer under Windows XP

By: Staff
Date: June 20, 2007

This division inside Windows XP makes it possible to be able to reach a printer since any computer of your network. We will see how to carry out this division. This can have a lot advantages: for example you will not need to buy a printer for computer; you will be able to print a document starting from any PC present on the local area network.

Before dividing a printer, the latter must be installed correctly on a computer. In this SoftwareTipsPalace.com tip our two computers function under Windows XP but note that it is completely possible of carries out this division with other versions of Windows.

Share printer

  1. To start open the Control Panel while clicking on “Start” then on “Control Panel”,
  2. Now double click on “Printers and Faxes”,
  3. You should see your printers listed. Now right mouse click on printer which you wish to share then click on “Properties”,
  4. A window opens, click on the tab “Sharing”,
  5. Then click on option “Share this printer”. It should be noted that you can have a message of the style “If you are conscious of the risks .....” if it is the first time that you make division on this computer, you thus can click on this message simply and you will be able to then share the printer. Give then a name to the division of the printer then click on “OK”,
  6. A small hand appears below printer icon, which means that it is well shared.

Installation of the printer on the other computers

  1. Now place on your second computer to add the printer shared above. Click “Start” choose “Control Panel” than choose “Printers and Faxes”. Then it will be necessary for you to click on “Add a printer” option which is placed on right window panel,
  2. An assistant opens; you can click on the “Next” button,
  3. Select “A Network Printer or a printer attached to another computer” then click on “Next” button,
  4. Choose the option “Browse for a printer” then click on “Next”,
  5. Here I thus have well my working group which is called “WORKGROUP” by defect under Windows XP. Note that one needs the same name of group on all your computers to be able to communicate. And I detect my first computer well named “STP”.  Now double click on your first computer where you shared the printer and you must see it then. Click on the printer then on “Next”,
  6. You will have then this alarm of safety which indicates to you that the pilots of the printer will be installed and that they can contain viruses. You do not worry you can click on “Yes” launching the installation,
  7. Windows will ask you whether it must use this default printer. If you click “Yes”, all the documents will be sent towards this printer in priority. Thus make as good seems to you.
  8. To finish this installation click on “Finish” button,
  9. Here it is, your shared printer is added on your second computer. You can repeat the operation on all the computers of your network if you wish that they have access to this printer. Now it any more but does not remain you to make a test of impression since your second computer.

We hope that this tip was very useful for you especially if you have more than one computer, it will save a lot of money of yours; you don’t have to buy new printer for any of yours computers. If you had any problems during this tip and you didn't manage to share printer in network just point to our Windows XP or Windows Vista forums.
