Windows XP Firewall

By: Staff
Date: February 23, 2007

Previously known as ICF changes of name and it is modernized now being the Windows Firewall, new configurations, activated by defect, exceptions of traffic by general program and in improvements for an easier and efficient use. Now the configuration of the Firewall is directly accessible from the Control Panel, where we will be able to find an icon that shows the picture to us of I engage in a dialog of figure.

First change consists of way in that we want to form the Firewall, activated, deactivated or activated without exceptions, this last way is very useful for equipment with mobility since if we were in a place I publish we can, marking simply this option, to completely close the access to the PC at issue.

Exceptions by program.

In previous versions this configuration was due to make by hand, with which many users were themselves incapable to make it. Selecting the program which we wished to add, if it is not in the list, the Firewall automatically detects the ports that uses and it opens them for that program, closing them when the program is closed.

From this same picture of dialogue it is possible to add to ports as much TCP simply as UDP. Another one of the configurations of this section is the rank of directions IP of which we are going to allow the access, are divided in three types: those of my network (Intranet or internal network, technically same subred), anyone, or a rank defined by hand in a list of directions IP.

Other configurations.

In the third folder, the call “Options Outposts”, we can find other configurations general of the Firewall. From this picture of dialogue we will be able to form the file of log, the connections that will be affected by the Firewall (would have to be all) and the ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol). The most interesting section is the one than it affects the connections, since it allows us to manage all previous but the this time by connection, which in case of having for example a card of network and a modem, will allow us to manage each one of them of different way.

Finally to emphasize the button that allows us to recover the values by defect, extremely useful if we were of tests. I recommend any user of the Service Pack 2 that uses this functionality, perhaps most shining of the new package, will maintain protégé' to him of the known attacks more, which comes from the network and this way its PC will be safer.
