Windows Vista Preparation: Non removable disks partition

For Windows Vista installation you need to have a lot of space on your hard drive. Before the operating system introduction holds on the computer, you should prepare therefore its non removable disk for the new Windows.
Windows Vista an unused partition: If your computer has a free non removable disk or partition, you can jump over this step. Otherwise you must create at least 15 GByte place for Windows Vista; 50 Gbyte or more are recommendable. Most simply that can be done, by shifting data of a little used partition to another place. You can again format in such a way free-vacated partition afterwards as administrator in the Windows data media administration. For progressing: Place create It, if your computer offers only a non removable disk/a partition, becomes more complicated on which the XP-data already lies. Accomplish in this case always only a data protection. Because if you accommodate both systems parallel, the risky task follows to make the existing partition smaller. Procure for this first the most current Knoppix CD image and burn yourselves you it on a blank. Start afterwards the computer with inserted Knoppix CD again. Arrived on the Knoppix Desktop, you look for the screen symbol on the starting border and open by click on it a “console”. In GParted you select the non removable disk from the drop down menu (right above), on which XP lies.
“Cloop” - entries may ignore you. Depending upon kind of non removable disk Windows XP lies on” /dev/hda “or “/dev/sda”. If the non removable disk is selected, GParted lists all partitions. Orient yourselves at file system, size and boat marking, in order to identify the Windows XP partition. You found the partition (in our example: /dev/sda1), click with the right mouse button on the entry. Make sure that the context menu shows the option “mount on”. Otherwise you must the partition first by means of “unmount” from the file system notices. Subsequently, you select “Resize/move”. In the following dialogue smaller you make the partition comfortably by sliding controls and click then on the switching surface “size change”. After the latter click on “use” goes to GParted to the work.
New partition provides: The partition list does not show now a new entry “assigned”. Within this range you provide a NTFS partition for Windows Vista. In addition you click with the right mouse button on “not assigned” and select “new” from the Context menu. Decide with the file system for “NTFS” and click yourselves on “add”. Control the lining up tasks again and endeavor you afterwards the switching surface “use”.
