WinFS means Windows Future Storage. It is about a new filing system intended to replace the NTFS which had supplanted itself the FAT. Initially envisaged as an integral part of Windows Vista, the next version of Windows, WinFS had finally been removed not to delay the project Windows Vista. Much more, WinFS should be compatible with all the versions of Windows XP, which is rather good news.

WinFS (Windows Future Storage) will organize the files differently. The goal is more or less to be able to do without the physical access path to the files. One should thus be able to very quickly find his documents and the information sought simply by means of research such as for example “My photographs of holidays” or “My new MP3”. It is in any case under this aspect that had been presented WinFS, which besides already allowed of the software like Google Desktop Search or MSN Desktop Search. Microsoft seems however to henceforth move worms of the functionalities not exclusively intended for the document retrieval.

Thus, WinFS could make it possible the software to better manage common information, such as for example an address book. It will have however to be seen whether this type of options could be easily exploitable by third software or if it will be confined with unit Windows/Office/MSN.
